Monthly Geomancy for January 2020
This monthly geomancy reading is special in that it not only begins a new year but a new decade as well. As always, I’ll divide the shield chart into four sections beginning in the upper right-hand corner of the chart with the lower three boxes reserved for the final influences. Each of the four sections will determine our focus for each week of January.
Looking over the shield chart, we find that it breaks down as follows:
- Conjunctio – Air, Mercury, Virgo, joining

- Acquisitio – Air, Jupiter, Aries, gain, profit
- Conjunctio – Air, Mercury, Virgo, joining

Note: see if you notice a pattern emerge with each week…there are two, and they’re interesting.
Week One
- 1) Conjunctio – Air, Mercury, Virgo, joining
- 2) Via – Water, Moon, Leo, Way, path, journey, active presence
- 9) Carcer – Earth, Saturn, Capricorn, imprisonment, evil
The first week of the year has us choosing between a new direction or continued self-imprisonment. Via is the significator, in this case, establishing a new path forward. Conjunctio and its complement Carcer make the choice easy, joining and union with others, or separation and self-imprisonment. Unless there’s a reason for continued separation, choosing unity is the preferred option.
Week Two
- Acquisitio – Air, Jupiter, Aries, gain, profit
- Conjunctio – Air, Mercury, Virgo, joining
- Fortuna Major – Fire, Sun, Leo, diurnal, greater fortune
Continued joint efforts with others bring greater profit this week with Conjunctio‘s appearance again reinforced by the presence of both Acquisitio and Fortuna Major. Through the joint acquisition of assets, real profit can be gained this week, so continue any joint endeavors with others.
Week Three
- Rubeus – Water, Mars, Scorpio, passion, evil
- Via – Water, Moon, Leo, Way, path, journey, active presence
- Puella – Air, Venus, Libra, fortunate, young girl
Now that we’re in week three, readers may have discovered one of the patterns mentioned earlier. A significator rune is present each week that either reinforces or balances the other two runes. In week three, Via appears again as the significator suggesting a new direction or path. Or, it could be restating the new path begun in week one.
The geomancy runes to balance are Rubeus and Puella, and their governing planets should inform us of what needs balancing, but in this case, instead of each one solely at the opposite end of the continuum, shared behavior is also experienced. The third week of January has us balancing intellect with emotions with passion affecting both.
Week Four
- Puer – Fire, Mars, Aries, young boy, impulsive action
- Conjunctio – Air, Mercury, Virgo, joining
- Puella – Air, Venus, Libra, fortunate, young girl
The second pattern emerges today as we see Conjunctio in the significator position again. We appear to balance youthful impulses during week four, embracing what works and letting go of what gets us nowhere. Conjunctio serves as the significator that joins the two youthful energies (Puer and Puella) together as we balance our will and intellect to preserve the success we’ve earned over the month.
Right & Left Witnesses and the Judge (Outcome)
- Amissio – Earth, Venus, Taurus, behavior resulting in loss
- Populus – Water, Moon, Cancer, people, group behavior, follower, passive influence
- Amissio – Earth, Venus, Taurus, behavior resulting in loss
The lower level of the shield chart is considered separately from the upper two rows and provides two influences called the Right and Left Witnesses with the final section of the shield chart considered the Judge or Outcome of the reading. And if the situation is still not clear, we can create a Reconciler from combining the Judge with the geomancy rune in section one. In this case, that will be Fortuna Minor or lesser fortune.
Briefly, the two patterns I found in the reading involve the repetition of significators and the balance factor of the remaining runes. The significator for weeks one and three is Via suggesting weeks one and two will focus on a new direction, while weeks two and four have Conjunctio as their significator suggesting an overall unity with others. Taken together, we can see the overall premise or focus for January is on the success alignment with others can foster.
Is it possible that impulse control issues during the fourth week of the month had a negative impact on the amount of success we achieved? Fortuna Minor, our Reconciler appears to suggest that might be the case. Or, it could be that week four reminds us that youthful impulses, reinforced by Amissio appearing once as a Witness and again as the Judge or Outcome, can impact our progress. Either way, following the group (Left Witness: Populus) may not be in our best interests especially if the group reflects imprisonment in behaviors that thwart success (Right Witness: Amissio).
It feels like we’re transitioning away from separation and moving in the direction of shared purpose and unity with others. Instead of working against our interests, we’ll instead join with others toward a common purpose and shared goal.
It’s about time.
