The Four Pillars Runecasting
I love this set of runes. They’re made from opalite and they’re delicate and beautiful. They feel light and opalite corresponds to the 3rd eye chakra, so intuition naturally came to mind. A while back I had found a tarot spread that deals with the various levels of the intuitive mind. From there, I found my own resonance with the spread and this one emerged. The deepest level of intuition casts Ansuz, Nauthiz and Mannaz. The next level casts balanced energy in the form of Uruz and Hagalaz, with Uruz representing the position of feminine energy in balance with Hagalaz, in the masculine energy position. In the final position sits Jera, the culmination of intuitive energy.
There are four elements, five if you include Spirit. In witchcraft, the witch develops these elements within. This is commonly referred to as the “Four Pillars” or the “Four Powers”, and they correspond to the four elements. To Know (Air), To Will (Fire), To Dare (Water), To Keep Silent (Earth). In looking at this runecasting, it feels like it represents this process. The deepest level of intuition would represent knowing, a quality of Air. Fire, an expression of will, is represented by the first rune of the next level. Daring to face our fears invokes the emotional resonance of Water, the second in the expression. Earth represents the stillpoint where all things coalesce. It represents the last pillar, To Keep Silent. It’s our inner stillness, our alignment with Source within.
Looking at the deepest level, Ansuz (Air) increases spiritual awareness and divinity within. It’s used to gain wisdom and aids in effective communication. On the other end of the spectrum, Mannaz, an Earth element rune, represents the rational mind, increasing memory and intelligence. Nauthiz binds the inner and outer influences together, its need fire providing impetus to the energy of To Know.
Uruz with its energy of manifestation is perfect in the To Will position. Strength and discipline influence and propel the inner flow of Uruz energy to Hagalaz as it Dares to transform the Will into manifestation.
To Keep Silent is an interesting idea. The easy definition is it means to keep silent about magic performed. But I think it’s more than that. It’s to keep your own stillpoint, to not become distracted by external forces, and to stay in your own alignment, particularly when performing ritual work, but really at all times in life. Jera is cast in this final position as the rune of transformation and balance. It brings events to pass. Jera gathers and holds all the other energies together in alignment, sending the resulting coalescence of influences into manifestation.
Anymore, I let the runes decide what they want to say. I rarely ask questions because they typically end up giving me exactly what I need anyway so why bother. I look for patterns to emerge and the runes never disappoint. I didn’t set out to see the Four Pillars in this one, but that’s what came through. It encourages us to learn and grow and stay creative. It encourages the will and focus to bring events to a successful conclusion. Runes depict a flow of energy throughout creation. The Four Pillars or Powers, illustrate that same process.
So this was cool..
