So, this is a fascinating reading today with Populus appearing six times, Fortuna Minor five times, Carcer twice, and Tristitia and Puer once. The interesting part about Populus is that it is really a neutral energy rune which means that it, like its complement Via, reflects the directionality of the experience, in this case, the direction of the group.
With Puer and Tristitia beginning the reading, we already know that unstable energy involves impulsivity and risky behavior. Tristitia adds to that a measure of secrecy along with an evil level of grudge-carrying and grief.
Fortuna Minor’s redundant effect involves lesser fortune, and along with the self-imprisoning influence of Carcer, we can see how that might be so, particularly when factoring in the other strong runic influences above.
This reading is truly about issues associated with following along with the group where one fails to think for oneself and the impact that can have on that individual. It’s risky to become subservient to others. An individual who does so risks embracing a cult-like experience and the harsh impact it has on one’s life. But it’s a choice and it’s one that cannot necessarily be easily undone, not without repercussions such as harassment or worse.
Allegiance to the group, especially if run by a charismatic leader, results in being conned or duped into believing lies that if acted upon can lead to untold heartache in the end. So, let this reading be a cautionary tale to anyone who finds comfort in a cause or group. If you give away your sovereignty to those who are self-serving, odds are that you end up mattering nothing at all other than to be used by individuals so craven that you become only a means to their end. And who needs that?
