Jupiter/Saturn Conjunction on 21 December 2020
Jupiter and Saturn are forming an extremely close conjunction on December 21st, 2020 which won’t happen again until March 15, 2080. A close conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn happens every twenty years but on the 21st, Winter Solstice, the two planets will be within a degree or so of each other, closer than typically occurs. A conjunction such as this one between the two planets happened in 1683 and 1226 as well but was visible to skywatchers only in 1226. So, it’s been a while since Jupiter and Saturn were this close to each other. (1)
I’m not going to address whether or not this same sort of planetary conjunction reflects the birth of Jesus in December because there seems to be the collective understanding that he was likely born in the Spring, but it seems possible that the so-called Star of Bethlehem was actually a planetary conjunction happening at the time.
As I was updating the spreadsheet I use for all the information that becomes each week’s Weekly Esoteric Influences post, I noticed in the Human Design section that beginning on Wednesday, 16 December, Jupiter and Saturn share the same Gate and Line information (60.4) from that day’s chart. Resourcefulness, or the potential for success enhanced by limitation, is shared by both Jupiter and Saturn and it isn’t until Friday, 18 December that Saturn shifts into Leadership (60.5) and we experience confusion brought about by a leader who cannot seem to handle limitation.
By Sunday, 20 December, both Jupiter and Saturn are again occupying the same Gate and Line (60.5) of Leadership and it isn’t until Thursday, 24 December when Jupiter shifts to Gate 60 Line 6 Rigidity suggesting restraint that is dependent upon circumstances. Could we then witness some restraint in response to the ongoing divisive antics of a confused leader?
Aspect-wise, Jupiter and Saturn have been in conjunction with each other for some time. In fact, both 3 and 4-point Stelliums have been in effect between Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, and Pallas as well, so we’ve been witnessing a powerful interaction between expansion, contraction, regeneration, and strategy for a while now. Freedom and restriction have been at odds, particularly with respect to how we see the COVID-19 pandemic, and this contrast has found its expression in how we interact with others. As long as we can strike a balance, things work well, otherwise, disruption occurs and our safety is threatened.
In addition, given the deception surrounding the recent presidential election and the refusal of the current president and those who support him to acknowledge the truth that he will be leaving office shortly, I wonder if the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction is signaling either a change in that regard or at least providing the energy for it. It may take time for the truth to set in, but perhaps a shift is in process.
Otherwise, I believe the effect of the Jupiter and Saturn conjunction on the individual may indicate balancing the following:
- Ideals versus practicality
- Enthusiasm versus diligence
- Discernment versus cause-based action
- Freedom versus limitation/restraint
You can see that each one manifests in how we relate to the world and to each other. Will we be able to dispense with the violence, vitriol, and deception that has come to define our relationships with others? Or will it increase while we struggle with incorporating the message of both Jupiter and Saturn in our daily lives?
The two planetary energies, although seemingly different, rely on each other as a counterbalance. And in applying that effect on our personal lives, although we don’t always have to agree on or share the same beliefs or perceptions, can we at least agree not to harm each other in the process?
This rare alignment between Jupiter and Saturn is providing the direction forward, one that is in alignment with self and others, balancing polarity within and without, in respect and love for the collective aspect of self.
That this conjunction occurs on the Winter Solstice is prescient because it represents the time where daylight is shortest and the nighttime the longest, a sort of it’s darkest before the dawn moment where we can consider all that has been and what is still yet before us.
Perhaps we can use this time on the Winter Solstice (maybe we should call it the Winter Soulstice) to return to a perspective that favors harmony over division, and truth over deception. And may we use the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction on the Winter Solstice to light that path forward.
Blessings!
