A New Journey ~ A Tarot Reading for 13 January 2021
As the impeachment hearing began I shuffled my cards from the Morgan-Greer deck and laid out three cards to see the influences present. I drew 6 of Swords, the Queen of Cups, and the 9 of Swords, so already we see influences of intellect, communication, and justice from Elemental Air with an overarching effect from Cups and the Queen that suggests compassion and empathy.
Beginning with the 6 of Swords, we see a woman huddled against the elements while being transported in a small boat across a body of water. Six swords stand with their points downward in front of her in the forward area of the boat as a man uses a staff to push the two of them along. Although this deck leaves this element out, the Rider-Waite deck shows a child sitting next to the woman. But in any event, both decks show that this journey is happening in winter, with darkness present.
The 6 of Swords depicts a journey over water and a shift in direction. It’s a new journey that we take with this card into new perceptions and experiences in the journey our soul takes in physical form.
Next in the three-card spread is the Queen of Cups holding a golden chalice as she looks to the past. A large shell, likely representing the back of her throne appears in the background over the ocean’s expanse. Shells comprise her beautiful crown with pearls adorning the edges of her robe. She wears an upturned crescent moon with a teardrop pendant below around her neck to honor her Crone phase of life.
Our empathic Queen reflects on the past to heal the present and future. She may have trouble setting boundaries with those she loves, but above all, she approaches challenges with compassion and patience.
Lastly, we come to the 9 of Swords, the final card of the reading where we see two arms, both hands fisted and bound together while nine swords appear in an erratic balance above. The sky is dark orange and coupled with the rest of the elements on the card it appears that the individual is bound by and to self-delusion and deception. The 9 of Swords illustrates ego run amok and the inability to let go of negativity. That the arms rise in defense of ego and in defiance of truth tells the story of today’s events.
Today’s impeachment of a president who has incited a violent insurrection on the country represents how one man’s destructive ego has brought untold damage to a democracy based upon unity and a shared path forward. But we know from the 6 of Swords that a new path is opening, and with the Queen, we know that it’s one that focuses on empathy and compassion for all. The 9 of Swords demonstrates the strong hold that deception has on part of the country and the difficulty they will have in letting go of the lies they’ve accepted as their truth.
But it’s also clear that we need a new path forward that reflects the light of truth. It will take patience and empathy of the Queen within to bring about fundamental and necessary change. So blessings to all who understand this truth, and blessings of peace and compassion to those left to their own illusion. Let us all hope that they find their way home.
