The Spell of the Runes
I love knot magick. But doing a dark moon ritual during the 3am hour with only one candle lit, and forgetting to have a cord on the altar, I decided to make do with runes. Knots one through four are on top, five through eight on the bottom, with nine in the middle. I wondered how close the runes would come to the chant itself. In a knot spell, I would tie a progressive series of knots, nine in this case, while chanting each line with each knot tied. I like it because it allows the energy of your intention to build along with the energy required to send that intention.
And now, the runecast.
By the cast of one, my spell’s begun – Eihwaz, the axis of magickal transformation, provides a link between worlds, and also guards against self-destructive behavior. It moves energy up and down, from one state to another, turning difficulties into advantages. Could there be a better rune with which to begin a spell?
By the cast of two, my spell is true – Algiz provides the connection to the Divine as the rune of higher consciousness. It represents the BiFrost Bridge, the connection between physical and non-physical realms. Aligned with the Higher Self, the intention is as well, providing further impetus.
By the cast of three, my spell is free – Perthro represents the well from which runes are thrown or tossed. It’s the mystery of fate representing both cause and effect of the physical plane and the synchronicity present in the nonphysical realm. It offers the influence of the unknown or Wyrd in the sense of nonresistance to the outcome, allowing fate to decide.
By the cast of four, my spell is stored – Thurisaz gathers and builds the energy of the spell, providing the catalyst needed for the spell to move unfettered into its full expression
By the cast of five, my spell will thrive – Berkano brings things to fruition. Fertility is its influence, invoking Earth energies of protection, new beginnings and healing. It brings the spell into being.
By the cast of six, my spell I fix – Raidho directs energy in a specific direction, finding its true purpose. Its honorable and just influence creates harmony, balancing unstable situations. It brings integrity to the spell.
By the cast of seven, my spell awakens – Sowilo, the rune of will and Higher Self, strengthens the will of the witch, therefore, the will of the spell. All energy comes to bear in full force promising a successful outcome.
By the cast of eight, my spell binds fate – Othala is the balance between order and chaos. Containing all runes within its structure, it is the rune of sacred space, where all magick is possible. It invokes kinship and ancestral traditions, thus bringing Akashic resonance into the spell.
By the cast of nine, my desire, mine – Isa teaches us that its our resonance that matters, our alignment. Interesting that I drew that as the final rune of achieving my desired intent. Stillness, nonresistance, development of will all bring clarity found only with inner vision. The New Moon is a time for clearing out the old unwanted, reactionary aspects of self, leaving room for our true creative self to emerge. Beginning with Eihwaz, we see the energy coalesce, begin to build throughout with Algiz and Perthro, gathering, catalyzing with the power of Thurisaz. As it moves, the spell comes into being with Berkano, finds its integrity with Raidho, awakens with Sowilo, and finds its balance with Othala. In Isa, alignment with Source is achieved.
So that was cool! Too many for a bindrune, but in view of the fact that Othala contains all runes within, we’ll consider that as the bindrune for the spell. Maybe I should cast more in the 3am hour. It is the witching hour, after all.
