The fourth principle of polarity from The Kybalion by the Three Initiates states that:

“Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”

The Kybalion – 4th principle of polarity

Representing the fourth of seven principles, the principle of polarity acknowledges the esoteric and fundamental truth of who we are as a collective consciousness that, in effect, splits into a duality of spirit and ego as we enter into physical reality. Instead of understanding that we are the other side of the same coin with all others, we see everyone and everything as different or as the other. From there, in our perception of the ego’s separateness or individuality, a sense of otherness grows which expands into an us versus them experience which is where I believe we now collectively find ourselves.

The principle of rhythm follows the fourth principle and describes the cyclical nature of reality. One might think this would create a sense of balance, and yet we struggle against that flow in our attempt to personalize and ultimately violate the fourth principle of polarity. It says the following, with the final thought, rhythm compensates, as the key point:

“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.”

The Kybalion – 5th principle of rhythm

But instead of compensating and living within the rhythm established by All That Is, from there, after ignoring the fourth and fifth principles, we’re given another chance to understand the greater picture with the principle of cause and effect:

“Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause; everything happens according to law; chance is but a name for law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.”

The Kybalion – 6th principle of cause and effect

If we cannot (or refuse to) understand the nature of who we are as the self and other side of self, and we don’t work within the intrinsic cyclical rhythm of the soul’s expression into physical reality, the opportunity to reset the table and move forward in higher understanding could be lost. Perhaps all we have at that point is the interaction between cause and effect to guide our path.

But even that seems fleeting for some who blame everyone but themselves for the impact of their own choices and behavior. Nothing is ever their fault. Everyone else is responsible. And according to The Kybalion, even chance plays no part in the outcome. There may be unforeseen contributors, but they’re never there by chance. Instead they’re part of an eternal, purposeful dance, there to increase our individual and collective awareness.

The principle of rhythm inherently counsels against the imbalance brought about by, for example, someone seeking power. All things should remain in balance, and yet, for that to be possible, everyone must live in truth to a higher principle that what is reflected in higher consciousness must also be found in the lower vibrational physical reality.

As above, so below, as below, so above.” the second principle of correspondence, tells us that what manifests above also manifests below. It reflects an overall integration and reciprocity between soul and body, as well as between the various realms of higher consciousness. The same cosmic laws govern all.

As the All expresses Itself into physical form to create the universe (or multi-verse), it establishes in the first principle that: “The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.” What this first principle tells us is that the universe is a projection of the Mind of All That Is, and that we’re simply expressions of that point of singularity. But when we reach the level of physical reality, perception factors into how we experience that reality.

We are points of light that vibrate continually and remain in motion (the third principle of vibration – “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”). The rate slows as our light focuses into a greater density of form while it increases in the level of cosmic consciousness. It reflects a continuum like all other principles do, and we move along that continuum as we experience life. This is true as well for the seventh principle of gender: “Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles; gender manifests on all planes.”

The overall theme of the seven principles is the balance we strike within as well as without. But what it doesn’t imply is accepting the idea of either/or, for in truth we are both, especially if each soul, each individuated point of light, expresses its own view of existence in the same manner as does the All. In that regard, everything we perceive is a reflection of our own intention. And although we can each struggle with that notion, in the end, cosmic law is just that. Law.

I’ve focused upon polarization, rhythm, and cause and effect because it seems easier to see the message of those three principles play out. And given what is happening now in the world, if humanity cannot understand that each one of us is someone else’s other side of self, then reconciliation will be difficult to achieve. In truth, there is no other. And if the universe is an expression or projection of the Mind of All, then any perception of disunity or separation is merely an illusion.
