Exploring Tarot: The Lovers
The Lovers card depicts a nude man and woman with a volcanic-looking mountain between them in the distance. The man stands in front of a spindly oak tree while the woman stands in front of an apple tree with a serpent coiled around its trunk. An angel with red wings appears atop white billowy clouds while The Sun appears behind the angel’s head.
The woman looks upward at the angel while the man looks at her. Reminiscent of Adam and Eve, the woman’s knowledge is drawn from higher awareness, while the man’s focus is on the physical or lower ego awareness. Red lava is visible on the right side of the mountain suggesting passion and energy that is catalytic.
The man and woman represent duality and the balance between the receptive and projective sides of self, between higher awareness and ego, and between the feminine and masculine polarity within. It’s interesting, however, that the tip of the mountain leans toward the woman, suggesting that balance should favor the feminine or receptive side of self and the focus on higher awareness.
A card of Gemini, The Lovers reminds us to be aware of our inner balance and how that might impact our interactions or relationships with others.
