Exploring Tarot: Judgment
Emerging from the clouds, archangel Gabriel blows his trumpet while the dead, arms raised in supplication, rise from their caskets. Judgment, card 20 of the Major Arcana, describes awakening, renewal, and rebirth. The red cross in the center of the archangel’s flag describes the balance between spirit and physical reality and suggests a reset of the soul’s incarnation into a new path or existence. The colors of the archangel represent the four elements while the seven lines extending from the trumpet represent the septenate nature of creation, otherwise known as the seven cosmic rays.
The individuals rising from their caskets are hearing the song of All That Is, its vibrating resonance reminding them of who they are as souls seeking a physical experience. Therefore, Judgment in its highest interpretation represents the soul’s awakening and its ultimate ascension back to the collective consciousness.
When Judgment appears in a reading, it’s suggesting that awakening of some kind is either necessary or unfolding, and you need to accept the truth of that message. Whether it’s referring to a particular situation, or to your own general spiritual awareness, Judgment asks you to consider a deeper meaning to your reality and to rely on your inner wisdom.
