Exploring Tarot: 4 of Cups

Spread the love

In the 4 of Cups, a man sits with his arms and legs crossed on the ground with his back up against an oak tree. Three cups are placed upright in front of him while a hand reaches out from a small cloud holding a fourth cup as if in offering. The man looks down, unaware of what he has and what is offered.

With the man’s arms and legs both crossed, his body language indicates a self-absorbed and defensive posture. And the unconditional love and kindness offered by the unseen hand suggests that he’s too caught up in his own drama to see what’s before him. However, he runs the risk that at some point, when he looks up, all of what’s been offered will be gone.

When the 4 of Cups appears in a reading, it brings into question the querent’s emotional balance and whether or not s/he can emotionally engage with others. And, is the individual so sad or defensive that s/he cannot see that others are there to offer support?
