Exploring Tarot: 8 of Swords
A woman stands on wet, soppy sand, bound and blindfolded. She is surrounded by eight swords that pierce the sand while her back is to her home, the castle on the bluff. The 8 of Swords has more than one meaning, in my opinion. It can either represent turning your back on the perceptions or opinions of others, or it can suggest that you feel bound by your own beliefs, decisions, or perceptions. Without another card (or cards) to influence the interpretation, it’s difficult to know what direction to go with this card.
The eight numerology of the card suggests inner strength, which would be necessary irrespective of how the card is interpreted. Given that she’s surrounded by eight swords, there’s also a feeling of imprisonment with the 8 of Swords.
When the 8 of Swords appears in a reading, it asks you to consider how your own perceptions bind you to one decision or another. Or it could be signaling the need to turn your back on your own negative self-talk, or the negativity of others.
