Exploring Tarot: Queen of Swords
The Queen of Swords is a wise and independent older woman in authority who doesn’t suffer fools or anyone who wishes to engage in deception. We see her sitting on her throne adorned by a sylph, butterflies, and two crescent moons while on a hilltop amongst the clouds with trees behind her that seem to blow in the wind. She holds a sword pointed up to the sky while she extends a hand in welcome to all as a bird flies in the sky above.
The Queen of Swords is rational, intelligent, and she offers wisdom and clarity to those who seek her counsel. She’s attentive and understands the greater picture around her, however, with her sword, she cuts through any illusion or deception presented to her.
As a member of the Court, the Queen can represent the querent, reader, or someone with experience or authority that enters your life. And when she appears upright in a reading you’re either asked to see a situation in a rational and clear manner without emotions clouding your understanding or to seek out an older woman for advice. Should the card appear reversed, it could be signaling someone coming into your life who may be manipulative, unreasonable, and given to gossip or maligning others, or it could be you that is expressing those qualities.
