Beginning with Othala, today’s rune representing the as above or soul side of the significator runes, this rune describes our sacred space as well loyalty and tradition, underlying peace, and physical security. Tristitia, today’s geomancy rune representing the so below side of the equation, suggests fixation on grief, sadness, or sorrow, It keeps past hurt alive in the present moment and keeps one stuck in emotions that no longer are relevant. Tristitia essentially describes an ego reaction that doesn’t serve higher awareness.

Moving on to the cards, the 8 of Wands illustrates 8 staffs thrown into the scene by unseen hands. It suggests swift action, new opportunities, or feeling overwhelmed. The suit of Wands itself represents Elemental Fire and creativity, life force, and new opportunities. The numerology of 8 implies strength, material recognition and approval, leadership, and harmony. So, depending upon whether or not you’re the initiator of the exciting stuff you want to share, or the partner you want to share it with, a lot is happening, and it can be both exciting and overwhelming.

If the 8 of Wands describes the initiator, the Queen of Cups describes the receiver of that initiation. The Queen observes in a reflective and compassionate manner. She’s empathically aware of the emotions of others, and may have difficulty at times setting boundaries as a result. However, she’s both loving and patient, and she likely wants to have time to think about the opportunities her partner is suggesting.

Essentially, the initiator from the 8 of Wands needs to allow the Queen of Cups to take the time she needs to more fully understand and consider what’s being presented.

At this point, moving on to the 2 of Cups, it felt like we’re getting to a healing or reciprocity moment prematurely, so I drew the 7 of Wands. Now we have a balance in the reading between Wands (Fire) and Cups (Water). Although Water quenches Fire, in some cases it can create the space for Fire to happen, and in the case of this reading, I think that’s what’s happening.

The 7 of Wands depicts a man standing on a small hill while holding a staff in his hands while six more staffs are rising up below him. He’s getting above it all to understand what’s coming in on him. He could be trying to get more information, or it could be that either the initiator from the 8 of Wands or the receiver from the Queen of Cups needs more information. However, the 7 suggests observation (like the Queen) and letting everything settle out so that you can see the truth of whatever your partner is suggesting.

After looking at the 7 of Wands, the 2 of Cups clarifies that this is a conversation between two partners, either love partners or some other kind of partnership. But likely it’s a love partnership and, after a spirited discussion and some down time that may not make the initiator happy, both parties come together to heal and reaffirm the love and commitment they share. They drop resistance and reach out to each other in service to the relationship. And it’s notable that to do that they need to step away from the home to reaffirm their love while on neutral ground.

SUMMATION

The reading involves a partnership of some kind where one is telling the other about some new opportunties that could benefit them. However, it feels overwhelming to the other person and it may be best to allow that person to take the time necessary to truly understand the ramifications of it all. Now, that might not be what the person initiating the conversation wanted to hear and both may need to assert themselves to defend their position. From there, an agreement is made with both taking time to reaffirm their love for each other.

Too often, we can become stuck in our own perceptions and not give our partner the time necessary to come to terms with what we offer. Or, it’s possible that the other person can simply set aside his/her own opinions in deference to the other partner’s needs which can then result in resentment.

So, to prevent either from happening, today’s reading is suggesting that if you’re involved in something like this today, give your partner time to consider everything you’ve suggested. In doing so, you preserve the relationship in the long run and what you end up actually doing may be even better than what you first proposed.
