Exploring Tarot: 4 of Swords
A sarcophagus depicting an effigy of a knight sits alone in a mausoleum. A stained glass window above brings in filtered light. One sword appears on the side of the sarcophagus while three more are on the wall.
The 4 of Swords describes retreat and respite, allowing one’s thoughts to settle and the mind to heal. A card of both Elemental Air and Jupiter in Libra, the suit of Swords represents, among other things, the intellect, communication, thoughts, and perceptions. When this card appears upright in a reading, it’s telling us to take time to let our thoughts settle without anything influencing our perceptions, especially if a situation has been going on for a while and has become overwhelming. Reversed, the 4 of Swords could indicate that a situation is resurfacing or beginning anew.
