Exploring Tarot: 4 of Cups
A hand reaches out from a cloud holding a golden chalice in offering to a man sitting on the ground in front of an oak tree. Three more cups are standing upright in front of the man. The man’s arms and legs are both crossed in a defensive posture, and he doesn’t seem to see the cup that’s offered.
The 4 of Cups describes being stuck in unhappiness. It reminds me of a pity party that one can’t let go of. The man seems to be looking at the three cups in front of him but doesn’t appear to connect with the happiness or fulfillment they imply. He doesn’t draw strength from the oak tree behind him either. So, he can’t see what he has or what’s being offered.
Reversed, the 4 of Cups suggests happiness that is superficial or temporary.
