Exploring Tarot: The Magician
The Magician stands in front of his table, his elemental tools placed there to assist him in his work of manifestation. His tools also represent the four suits of the Tarot, Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Two expressions of eternity are found with the lemniscate (figure eight) above his head and the serpent with its tail in its mouth around his waist. Roses and lilies are scattered on the ground suggesting the blending of desire and purity of intention, while rose garlands appear above his head.
Card 1 of the Major Arcana, The Magician signals the manifestation of something new, whether it be the soul’s new incarnation or something more mundane in one’s life. However, with his as above, so below stance, he uses his wand to draw Spirit or Higher Awareness into physical reality. The Magician expresses consciousness, the development of will in alchemical balance, life force, and inspiration in our lives.
Reversed, The Magician indicates a lack of inner power or power that is used for personal gain.
