Exploring Tarot: 7 of Cups
A man in shadow gazes at seven cups amid dark clouds filled with a variety of items including a woman’s head, a serpent, a castle, jewels, a wreath, a dragon, and a mysterious-looking figure (possibly an angel) draped by a cloth that radiates energy. The 7 of Cups suggests dreams, possibilities, unrealistic expectations, and fantasy. Each cup appears to be the same other than the cup containing the wreath. On that cup, a skull appears. Does it hold the key to the seven items and suggest that it’s the seven deadly sins? Or do the cups simply represent the man’s dreams of success? How will he manifest each one? Or does the 7 of cups represent daydreams that will never be realized?
The 7 of Cups seems to present more questions than answers if we become caught up in the particulars of the card. But if we stand back and see it from a broader perspective, the 7 of Cups may suggest that we not let go of our dreams and to allow ourselves to dream the impossible. Because, in the end, who knows if a presumably impossible dream can become our reality?
Reversed, the 7 of Cups suggests a lack of imagination or living by the expectations of others.
