Exploring Tarot: Temperance
The Bringer Forth of Life. With one foot on the land and one in the pond, the archangel pours water from one cup to another balancing Elemental Fire (will) with Water (emotion). A sun disc appears in the middle of the archangel’s forehead while divine light radiates around her head. A glyph for Elemental Fire appears within the glyph for Elemental Earth on the archangel’s gown. A path leads from the pond to an area between two mountain peaks where the Sun rises in the distance. Yellow water irises bloom on the edge of the pond.
When Temperance, the 14th card from the Major Arcana, appears in a reading, it suggests balancing will with emotion, and higher consciousness with inner awareness. We’re asked to find our equilibrium, adapt, and express harmony within and without.
Reversed, Temperance may suggest a lack of balance and a tendency toward a service-to-self agenda.
