Sunday Tarot: Creating Abundance
Admittedly, Crowley’s Thoth Tarot is my favorite deck. Lady Freida Harris’s renditions of each card are energetic and powerful. For the three-card spread above, I drew The Empress, the 3 of Disks (Pentacles in other decks), and the 3 of Cups. You’ll notice that each card has a three numerology. The number three describes creativity, integration, interaction, imagination, and self-expression. Three also reflects triplicity which you see expressed in each card. Maiden, Mother, Crone in The Empress card with the Maiden and Crone Moons surrounding The Empress as the Mother aspect as well as the same depicted in her crown; the three wheels in the 3 of Disks, and the three overflowing ornate cups in the 3 of Cups.
The Empress is referred to as The Daughter of the Mighty Ones and is considered the Planetary Trump of Venus. Although she sits on her throne surrounded by tall grass, with birds perched on their tops, the scene suggests she’s emerging from a portal of creation. This makes sense given that The Empress corresponds to the Hebrew Letter, Daleth, which means door, so she essentially represents the doorway to creation. She holds a lotus flower in her right hand as a scepter while her left arm and hand cradles her unborn child. Leaning against her legs, an eagle with two heads is depicted on her shield suggesting balance or duality. A large white bird sits on her nest gazing at her four chicks. All things are possible with The Empress, and all around her reflects the abundance of creation.
Next, the 3 of Disks, a card of Mars in Capricorn, is known as the Lord of Material Work, although in this depiction of the card, it’s simply titled Works. Three wheels surround a triangle or pyramid amid blowing sand, with the glyph of Mars at the top and Capricorn at the bottom. In his book, Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, Lon Milo Duquette quotes Crowley’s assertion that the 3 of Disks represents “the material establishment of the idea of the Universe, the determination of its basic form”. Essentially, the 3 of Disks suggests creation, dedication, purpose, and development, the three wheels indicating movement and integration to achieve increase or gain in material security or abundance.
Lastly, the 3 of Cups, as the Lord of Abundance, is titled Abundance. It reflects Mercury in Cancer, its psychic sense blending intuition with empathic awareness. Lotus blossoms fill the three ornate pomegranate-like cups with water that flows into the pond below. Each cup sits on top of a lotus blossom serving as its foundation. Traditional interpretations of the 3 of Cups indicate pleasure, success, love, and abundance, suggesting abundance should be our natural state.
We express abundance in our love for family and the children who continue our legacy. It’s also expressed by the work we perform in life, never-ending and necessary for our survival. And lastly, abundance is expressed in the love, compassion, and empathy we offer others, and provides the foundation we all seek. In short, today’s reading is asking all of us to consider how we express abundance in our lives and how we extend the same to others. And with the reading’s overall numerology of nine (endings, completion, spirituality, and generosity), are we satisfied and fulfilled or do we have more work to do in that regard?
Blessed Be
