Exploring Tarot: The Empress
Daughter of the Mighty Ones. The Empress is card 3 in the Major Arcana, following the Fool, Magician, and High Priestess cards. Whereas The Fool represents the soul as it takes its leap into physical reality, The Magician creates the physical reality the soul will inhabit as well as the conscious aspect of self, while The High Priestess creates the subconscious aspect of self that includes intuition, inner wisdom, and the Divine Feminine within. From there, The Empress gives birth to creation.
The Empress sits on her throne surrounded by lush vegetation. She holds a scepter in her right hand while her left hand rests on her knee. A heart-shaped shield with the glyph for Venus in its center sits on the ground to her right.
A card of Venus, The Empress describes love, fertility, and abundance. She reflects the Mother aspect, beauty, success, and is considered a receptive presence. Upright in a reading, The Empress indicates fertility, abundance, wealth, happiness, and emotional well-being. Reversed, she might suggest infertility, the loss of wealth or material security, or a lack of growth or development.
