Bay Laurel, Laurus Nobilis
Also known as bay or sweet bay, The Sun rules Bay Laurel, and its astrological ruler is Leo. Its element is Fire, its direction is South, its day is Sunday, and its magickal power is To Will. Its energetic effect is masculine, projective, and active. Associated Deities are Brigid (goddess), Michael (archangel), and Och (Olympic Spirit)
Use in Rituals, Spells, and Magickal Workings
The leaf from the Bay Laurel shrub/tree can be used in magickal workings, fresh, dried, or powdered, but generally, the dried leaf is used. Bay leaves can be used in workings to promote wealth and success, for illumination and truth, to increase psychic ability, and in protection spells to protect against lightning, and to ward off baneful witchcraft such as hexes and curses. Bay leaves are also used during Yule and Imbolc observations.
Magickal Methodologies
- Dried Bay leaves can be used in mojo/charm/gris gris/hex bags or witch bottles for protection or to increase wealth and success.
- The dried leaf can be written on (name/names, desires, etc.) and then burned on a piece of ritual charcoal or tossed into a fire to cast your desired intention.
- Use alone or add to other herbs to create incense for protection, healing, and for Imbolc or Yule observations.
- Scatter bay leaves around the altar or workspace, or your home for protection during ritual/spells.
