Herbal Magicka: Burdock
Burdock, Arctium lappa
Also known as great Burdock and Clotbur, the planet Venus rules Burdock. Its element is Water, its direction is West, its day is Friday, and its magickal power is To Dare. Its energetic effect is feminine, receptive, and passive. Associated Deities are Anael (angel), and Hagith (Olympic Spirit)
Use in Rituals, Spells, and Magickal Workings
The leaves, roots, and seeds from the Borage plant can be used in magickal workings, fresh, dried, or powdered, but generally, the roots or seeds are used. Borage is used in workings to promote healing, for defense or protection, for rituals involving rebirth or cleansing, and to invoke higher consciousness or psychic ability.
Magickal Methodologies
- Dried Burdock root and seeds can be used in mojo or charm bags, witch bottles, or dream pillows.
- Anointed candles can be rolled in Burdock seeds to enhance a working.
- The seeds can be scattered to the winds at the end of a magickal working or around an area that needs protection.
- Burdock root can be decocted (simmered but do not boil) and painted onto runes or parchment paper to be used in various magickal workings
- Borage burrs can be placed around the altar or workspace, or your home during magickal workings for protection and warding. Caution: burrs have small hairs within them that can work their way into your fingers or hands. Use gloves or tweezers when handling them.
