Herb Magick: Elderberry
Elderberry, Sambucus nigra
Also known as Dwarf-Elder, dead-wort, and Wall-wort, the planet Venus rules Elderberry. Its element is Water, its direction is West, its day is Friday, and its magickal power is To Dare. Elderberry’s energetic effect is receptive, feminine, and passive; and its associated Deities are Anael (angel), and Hagith (Olympic Spirit).
Use in Rituals, Spells, and Magickal Workings
The berries, flowers, leaves, and bark from the Elderberry bush can be used in magickal workings, fresh or dried. Elderberry is used in magickal workings to remove negativity, cleanse, and purify, and it can be burned as part of herbal incense on Litha.
Magickal Methodologies
- Fresh or dried Elderberry leaves, berries, and flowers can be used whole on the altar or workspace during magickal workings.
- Dried Elderberry flowers or berries can be added to mojo or charm bags and then carried with you to influence a desired outcome.
- Dried Elderberry leaves, flowers, or berries can be added to a simmer pot or the top of a candle (pillar, votive, tea light) for cleansing, purification, or removing negativity. You can also anoint a candle with oil and then roll the candle in crushed leaves or dried flowers.
- Make an Elderberry infusion with the leaves (berries will turn the infusion dark blue or purple, which if that’s your goal, then fine) and then use the infusion to paint on a small piece of parchment paper or runestock to enhance a working. For example, paint the infusion on a piece of runestock (or parchment paper rolled into a small scroll) prior to creating a bindrune to carry with you.
