Herb Magick: Horehound
Horehound, Marubium vulgare
The planet Mercurty and the sign Gemini rule Horehound. Its element is Air, its direction is East, its day is Wednesday, and its magickal power is To Know. The energetic effect of Horehound is masculine, projective, and active; and, its associated Deities are Hermes, Thoth, Isis, Odin, and Athena; Raphael (angel), and Ophiel (Olympic Spirit).
Use in Rituals, Spells, and Magickal Workings
Horehound leaves can be used in magickal workings, fresh, dried, or powdered, to assist in positive communication, creativity, and achieving clarity. When Horehound blooms and then the blooms dry on the plant, they can be quite sticky and can stick to your clothing as well as your hair. I recommend tucking your hair into a cap so the sticky whorls can’t get stuck in your hair, and check your clothing to be sure they haven’t gotten into your socks or pants.
Magickal Methodologies
- Fresh or dried Horehound leaves can be used whole on the altar or workspace during magickal workings.
- Dried Horehound leaves can be added to mojo or charm bags and then carried with you to influence a desired outcome.
- Dried Horehound leaves can be powdered and then added to a simmer pot or powdered to the top of a candle (pillar, votive, tea light).
- You can also anoint a candle with oil and then roll the candle in powdered Horehound leaves.
- Make a Horehound leaf infusion with fresh or dried leaves, and then use the infusion to paint on a small piece of parchment paper or runestock to enhance a working. For example, paint the infusion on a piece of runestock (or parchment paper rolled into a small scroll) prior to creating a bindrune to carry with you or to invoke rune magick.
