Exploring Rune Magick: Uruz
Uruz, depicted by the ancient aurouchs, embodies strength, endurance and courage. A Water Element rune, Uruz is the Rune of Changes. It’s used to draw something into your life, initiated by force of will. Uruz removes self-doubt. Its horns pointing downward represents energy shaping matter, a creation archetype. Tyriel writes:
Uruz is the rune of becoming. It is the rune of immediate action, in the physical and organic world. When a thought becomes a physical thing, it is being manifested through some means, into a reality. Through the secrets of Uruz we can shape our body, our environment, our habits and the structure of our brain. This is our primitive, animal self. (1)
Thorsson agrees:
Uruz is the patterning and formulating power in the multiverse, the source of the ordering principles that lead to the final formulation of the world. The U-rune is the unmanifested pattern of matter (contrast with the antimatter nature of isa). (2)
Uruz is the force behind form, not the form itself, therefore magickally, it can shape and influence circumstances. New beginnings can be influenced, as well as enhancing grounding and centering, and it can be drawn, worn or carried for that purpose. Uruz can be used in bindrunes for healing and growth. I used it in the bindrune I made for the garden shown in previous post on Fehu. I included it because of it’s energy of manifestation. With the horns pointing downward, growth energy moves downward into the earth, fostering healthy plant growth. I now have more pasta and salsa than I have shelves to store them on.
From Diana L. Paxson:
URUZ is energy and sustenance that has to be fought for, and it provides the energy to defend and preserve one’s community. However, in a natural society there is a cooperative and religious relationship between hunter and prey; each takes risks for survival, and the hunt is a transformative experience for both. When the uplifted horns of the wild ox sink earthward, the wild energy is changed into available resources, and there is food for both body and soul. This is also the energy that is used in healing, a powerful flow that revitalizes the patient by strengthening the will to live. (3)
It’s the ability of Uruz to shape and influence that makes it such a great rune to have show up in a runecasting. Its energy is both strong and nurturing, and may indicate issues surrounding health, or a need to stand one’s ground. Drawing Uruz may indicate a need to embrace its strength when overcoming challenges. Again, looking at surrounding runes can give insight into the form Uruz’s manifesting energy will take.
Whether it’s a situation or a personal awareness that needs insight, runes provide a perspective outside of us. They make sense of the world around us and our place within it.
