Thoth Tarot: Completion, Awareness and Manifestation
I haven’t done a Thoth Tarot spread in a while and now that I have a little more time, I thought I’d see what the cards have to say today. The first line of the spread begins with the 10 of Swords, The Universe and The Aeon. On the next line below, we have the Prince of Wands and the 4 of Cups. Lastly, the final card is the Ace of Swords. Two Major Arcana cards are represented as are two cards representing Air and one card each representing Fire and Water.
The Major Arcana cards are two that Aleister Crowley renamed. The Aeon is typically called Judgment in other decks; and, The Universe is typically known as The World. He also changed the order of several Major Arcana cards; Crowley had his own ideas of how the Tarot should flow. Instead of Pages and Knights, Crowley uses Princesses and Princes respectively. And instead of the King, he uses the Knight.
The colors used in the deck elicit an intuitive response in me so I rely more on how I feel about the cards instead of my notes or various texts I study. Looking at the 10 of Swords, I feel a catalytic energy coming in from all directions. It’s time to drop resistance and to center, align and know.
The Universe suggests reawakening and completion, a liberation of sorts, followed by present moment awareness found in The Aeon. Renewal and awakening are both favored, supporting the completion found with The Universe. It feels like the 10 of Swords and the Universe signify the end of perhaps a busy or difficult period, with The Aeon signifying a change in awareness that brings renewal and awakening. That’s a welcome relief.
Projective and receptive influences are felt with The Prince of Wands and the 4 of Cups. The Prince of Wands sits in the receptive position and the 4 of Cups in the projective position. Looking first at the Prince of Wands, we have an individual who likes adventure. He’s intelligent, protective of others and passionate. The Court cards can signify an individual or the qualities expressed by the individual.
In the projective position, the 4 of Cups in the Thoth deck suggests although there appears to be some balance and structure, it feels like an over abundance of some sort. Wealth is present, but it may be time to reflect and gain some clarity.
Balancing projective and receptive energies are interesting with these cards because it feels like they should sit in the opposite positions. The Suit of Wands reflects the Fire Element and is projective or masculine in nature. Conversely, Cups represents emotions and the Water Element, a receptive or feminine quality. With the suits reversed this way, it feels like the message is to step out of our comfort zones a bit and be more proactive, balanced by a less reckless focus perhaps.
The Ace of Swords is in the final position. I look at this one as not necessarily the outcome, but the overall direction the spread is going. This is the Great Sword of the Magus. Here we manifest thought into form. We cut through all illusion when this card presents, achieving full clarity in the process.
So the flow of this spread is interesting. It begins with completion and new awareness, and a suggestion to step out of our comfort zone somewhat when pursuing new adventures. Our focus is clear, and we manifest effortlessly.
Nice! I love when cards both flow well and give me something unexpected. For me, I’ve completed several major projects and with Spring here and gardening around the corner, I’m eager to begin something new. And since I’ve been doing little else for the last few years, stepping outside my comfort zone should be no problem. The cards are clear. We are manifesters and it’s time to be creative and bold. So, until next time..
