Spread the love

On a stormy Friday (no pun intended) I felt right using my Morgan Greer Tarot deck. With snow spitting a little, I thought its colorful presentation would improve my mood after reading the news. I’m still waiting for that one. I hate the tail end of the flu. I’m not quite ready to take my daily 6-mile walk so I’m watching Ancient Aliens instead. It’s my typical Friday fix anyway. That or a nice long Supernatural binge.

In keeping with the year of change, the overall numerology for today’s reading concurs. We also have Pentacles dominating along with one card, Death, present in the center from the Major Arcana which also supports change, rebirth, and renewal. Other than that, the overall impression I have of the reading before really looking at each card is a positive change in family or love matters. Something foundational about our lives is changing and it’s positive. I mean, Death offers us a smile and a white rose, so what more could we ask for?

Balanced wealth is presented by the 10 of PentaclesWe see an affluent couple, perhaps the King and Queen, quietly exchanging looks in front of an archway overlooking the land below. Two flags cross behind the couple, five pentacles on each one. A closer look captures the polarity between the couple with the right-hand staff crossing in front of the left-hand staff reflecting the patriarchal structure of the time. But it’s clear that love is there evidenced by the man’s loving embrace of his wife. The 10 of Pentacles describes the legacy of a life well-lived.

Then we come to Death, the thirteenth card of the Major Arcana. A fiery red river flows behind the Reaper, its color extending to the sky as a brilliant orange sun sets in the distance. Spiky trees rise in the distance while a vulture flies above the river. Death himself stands smiling, his scythe at the ready. Purple adorns his hood, his cape kept closed by a golden clasp at his bony neck. A grayish white rose comprises one-quarter of the scene as if pushing its way into existence. As the Reaper clears away what no longer serves, the rose blooms in defiance, our dying and becoming complete. Also representing the Crone phase of the Goddess, Death asks us to accept change with grace and dignity as we willingly let go of the past and embrace new ideas and opportunities.

I love the 9 of Pentacles in the Morgan Greer deck. We see a colorfully dressed woman, her headdress suggesting wealth and affluence. A falcon rests on her gloved hand, its hood similar to its owner’s turban. She holds a bowl spilling over with purple and green grapes while wearing her wealth as a talisman of nine pentacles. She seems pleased with whatever she’s looking at or thinking about. I’ve always viewed this card as a woman taking stock of her family and her life. Perhaps they’ve come to visit and she’s watching the children run and play, delighted at how her family has grown. Although she’s had a productive life, she seems settled now, ready for the next phase to begin.

Okay, so the simplest interpretation is that the husband of many years dies and she’s doing well because they took the time to carefully plan. But that’s too easy. I’ve always viewed the Death card as simply a transition of awareness. When it appears, it tells me that some new thinking is taking place. Given that everything is manifested thought, it makes sense to me that how we see something may be changing for some reason. Pentacles represent Elemental Earth and our material aspect of Self. But this may have less to do with monetary issues and more to do with a sense of commitment to others such as one’s family or community.

Tomorrow is the March For Our Lives around the world. Young people along with a gazillion others will be marching for sensible gun reform. It really speaks to our legacy that they even need to do such a thing. What have we done to our children by our acceptance of lockdown drills, police on campus, and the unwillingness to the simplest of things, remove assault weapons from private hands? After watching a few of them on the news shows today, I’d say that we’ve failed them and now they’re going to take matters into their own hands and define the narrative for us.

I’m stunned and as a mom, oh so proud of these young people. I initially wrote, kids, but thought better of that given what they’ve experienced and their unwillingness to step back and let it all go the way lawmakers seem to do. They’re not accepting no for an answer and want change now.

So do I.

So march if you’re able. Hubby and I will, unfortunately, have to watch this unfold on the television because we’re still not well enough to walk any farther than the mailbox without either passing out or having coughing spasms. But we’ll be there in spirit with our hearts full and tears streaming down our faces.

Blessings to everyone tomorrow as they stand up for what our current president will not.
