A Little Comeuppance Will Be Nice
I love the word, comeuppance. It evokes a sense of justice, creating balance, and making things right. And from the initial headlines I read this morning, it looks like many will be experiencing that process going forward, falling on attorneys, lawmakers, election workers, Russians, presidents, sons-in-law, adult children, sidekicks, speakers, hackers, whatever Cambridge Analytica is, and social media giants.
During the Spring I typically take stock of the year before. I do it at the end of October as well during Samhain or Halloween as it’s also known. In the Spring, it’s a time for balance and to set the intention for the upcoming growing season. This year, my husband started my tomato and pepper seeds, far too early, and now we’re pruning them to keep them on the small side for another six weeks or so before they can be outside without the frost killing them. But they’re beautiful and even if I have to bring them in at night, I’m happy to do it.
But between all the weeding, composting, and planting witnessing the dominoes as they continue to fall is must-see TV. I read today that Paul Ryan is leaving. I mean, now that he’s made his friends, and himself, rich beyond their wildest dreams, what is there left to do? He might as well retire and live off the interest from the windfall he’s no doubt receiving. He’ll have no problem finding healthcare or affording health insurance. His pension alone from his years in the House would be enough for any average American to live on.
Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress yesterday. Senator Durbin asked him where he stayed the night before and who he sent texts to for the previous week. Zuckerberg declined to answer, which prompted Senator Durbin to respond with, that’s sort of the point. It was brilliant! If the boy thought he was talking to Luddites and old people he was disabused of that notion when the good Senator took him to school. I’ve never been gullible enough to think that social media and companies that do business online won’t pull stuff, but what Facebook did giving Cambridge Analytica access to our private information is, as far as I’m concerned, no different than someone stealing your identity. Only, it’s actually worse than that. We have to enjoy a certain level of trust or no one will be able to continue using these services.
So, a little comeuppance needs to happen here. For mobster-esque attorneys, and anyone else who seeks to deceive us. Although the evidence hasn’t been presented completely, I will be surprised to find out that the current president and his campaign didn’t collude with Cambridge Analytica and Russia to influence the outcome of the election. I believe through false news stories and ads that people were influenced in such a way to affect the outcome, otherwise, how could Clinton have garnered nearly three million more votes and not be sitting in the Oval Office? No. I believe something happened. And with the latest raid on the president’s personal attorney’s home, office, and hotel room, the impending comeuppance may have begun.
It makes sense to watch who resigns, who is fired, and who takes their place, not only who is being raided. It also makes sense to watch what doesn’t happen. We have a president driven by emotional impulse, and when he begins a new Tweet-storm, he’s giving us a window into his fear. He believes by repeating all of his lies, again and again, he can control the narrative. Farmers supported him and now he’s decided they’re patriotic enough to lose money while he engages in a trade war with China. Really? So it’s patriotic to lose when he told them they would get tired of so much winning?
And now he wants National Guard troops to guard the border with no weapons. So are they really there to build his insane wall? How many of these guardsmen and women will have to leave their jobs to do this? How will this affect employers? I read the other day that two border “prisons” have been closed because there’s no one to fill them. He’s been told some things. Which he then talks and tweets about. Women raped on levels like nothing before. Not true. He’s ruining our relationship with our southern allies with his stupid comments while stoking more fear and racism at home.
The day Donald Trump and his family receive their own brand of comeuppance can’t come soon enough.
Blessed Be
