The Energy of a Lunar Eclipse

I love full moons. The energy is amazing. Add to that a lunar eclipse, and the energy intensifies. For me, a lunar eclipse represents alignment. Not only is it a physical alignment of the sun, earth and moon, it’s the perfect representation of “as above, so below”. During an Esbat ritual, we become the conduit between Goddess or Source and Gaia, in alignment as we draw down Full Moon energy. Our alignment is complete as we ground moon energy into the crystalline grid surrounding Gaia.  As we are Above, So are we Below.

The eclipse itself embodies all phases of the moon from full to dark, back to full. Its energy is intense because it’s not just a gradual waxing into its full state, but manifests as a full cycle unto itself within the normal cycle. All types of magick can be worked during this time, of which the more organized witch will take full advantage. Infusing moon energy into cords using knot magick, for example, stores the energy for future spell work. Nine knots tied are later released in the order of their tying, either all at once or over nine days, depending upon the spell invoked. Magicks of decrease including banishing spells can be invoked during the waning or darkening phase of the eclipse. Magicks of increase can be invoked during the waxing phase, from dark back to full. Half the fun is in the planning..

Full moons represent endings and beginnings. It’s the time when we let go of negativity, and all things that no longer serve us. Representing the Goddess as Mother, spells cast will be powerful at this time, as will divination and psychic work. For Hedge Witches in particular, a lunar eclipse is the perfect time for hedge riding. It’s not every day that we can experience the energy of all moon phases in an hour or less, so this is exciting! Relax into being..become expansive..merge into loving energy.

We create sacred space or cast a circle to invoke the Blessed Goddess, becoming One with Her, resonating in our immanence, in Per2014-10-08 03.37.47fect Love and Perfect Trust. Elemental Guardians surround and protect us as we draw down Goddess Moon energy, blessing us with healing love and light. We remain in resonance until we feel the energy release back to the moon. And, as always, on a Full Moon, we charge a new jar of moon water, and any new crystals we might have acquired during the previous month.

Energy is neither good or bad, it simply is. Although we can and do observe “magickal times” for spell work, we can always balance energy whenever the situation requires it. It’s just that during a Full Moon, and in today’s case, a total lunar eclipse, the energy available to the witch is at its most powerful. The alignment of energy is what makes it so.

Besides, there’s nothing like being bathed in moonlight.

As Above, So Below. Blessed Be the Full Hunter’s Moon!
